Apple Intelligence is finally coming to iPhones in mainland China, and it will not run on the same outside model Apple uses elsewhere. Apple confirmed on its China newsroom on October 31 that testing begins November 4 in the next iOS developer beta, with a public launch in December as part of iOS 27.3. Alibaba announced the same day that its Qwen model will power parts of the experience. Two years after Apple Intelligence was unveiled in 2024, the China version arrives with a local partner, a local model, and a feature set shaped by local approval.

In China, users will be able to reach Qwen from Siri for certain requests, from Writing Tools, and from Visual Intelligence, covering text and image understanding and content generation. Writing Tools gains a compose option that lets Qwen draft original text from scratch, and Visual Intelligence can answer questions about photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations, after users sign in with a Qwen account or Sign in with Apple. The first wave also includes Live Translation, Genmoji, Clean Up in Photos, natural-language photo search, notification summaries and Smart Reply. What it does not include matters just as much: Siri AI and the other next-generation features announced at WWDC 2026 stay out, the rollout is iPhone-only for now, and it runs on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo, with device and Siri language set to English or Simplified Chinese.

Alibaba says participation is opt-in and that it will not use user requests or generated responses to train its models. Eligibility covers people who bought an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China, or whose device location and Apple Account region are both set to China. The timing follows a long regulatory path: in July, China's cyberspace authority completed the filing for Apple Intelligence among seven on-device generative AI services for smartphones. In other words, the model swap was not a product preference. It was the price of entry.

For builders, this creates a clean two-engine world. The same Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence surfaces will behave differently inside China because a different model sits behind them, with different strengths in language, tone and edge cases, and the app does not get to choose which engine answers. Anyone shipping for users in both markets should use the November 4 beta to test Writing Tools in Simplified Chinese across formal and casual registers, and Visual Intelligence on real photos, documents and signs rather than demo images. Assuming identical output across regions is now a bug waiting to ship.

The same split is showing up in infrastructure politics. TechCrunch reported November 1, via Axios, that OpenAI is preparing a post-midterm public campaign in the United States, with chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane floating AI speed limits, global standards and rebranding data centers as AI compute campuses. Put the two stories together and the lesson is the same: frontier AI no longer ships as one global product. It ships market by market, under local rules, local partners and local names, and practitioners who plan for that fragmentation early will spend less time retrofitting later.

Anthropic Puts 5 Percent of Itself Into a Public Benefit Fund That Grows With Its Value

Anthropic announced on Sunday that it will commit 5 percent of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval, with the stake designed to grow as the company does. At the board's discretion, an additional 2 percent can be added for every 50 percent increase in the company's value above a set baseline. It is an unusual move in an industry where, as Anthropic itself put it, escalating equity awards usually go to executives. Here, that equity is being routed to the public benefit instead.

Disney Is Paying for the Team, Not the App: Character.AI's Workforce Moves In

Disney is not really buying Character.AI. It is hiring it. A bankruptcy filing spotted by Bloomberg and reported by TechCrunch on October 18 shows Disney agreeing to make employment offers to at least 60 Character.AI employees, the majority of the startup's workforce, at an estimated 60 million dollars in annual compensation. Other reports on the same filing put the number offered at 66 people. The filing says the vast majority of those offered jobs have accepted them, which tells you how this story ends even before the auction does.

Replit Makes OpenAI Its Default Over Anthropic, and the Default Is the Prize

Replit chief executive Amjad Masad speaking on stage at a conference.

Replit has handed the most valuable slot in AI coding to OpenAI. Chief executive Amjad Masad said on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt that the company is no longer working with Anthropic, then clarified over the weekend that the break is not total: customers can still choose Claude, but ChatGPT is now the default and OpenAI is the preferred partner powering Replit Agent. In a market where most users never open the model picker, that distinction is mostly accounting. The default gets the traffic, the learning, and the spend.
